Barber Osgerby
"Looking at the thread running through Edward Barber and Jay Osgerbys' work, there is a high level of consistency and diversification, a coming together of design integrity, substance and modernity.
One can see no superfluities: function is allowed to define form in a way that is simple and intuitive while being guided by a free spirit of experimentation with the most advanced technologies" Lucy Bullivant 2006.
Over the past ten years Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have worked across a wide range of disciplines to create everything from furniture, lighting, household products, restaurants, shops, drinks bottles and electronic products for companies based in Europe, Asia, North and South America.
Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby studied Architecture together at The Royal College of Art in London and established BarberOsgerby in 1996. From their studio in Trellick Tower, West London, they first designed the Loop Table, produced by Isokon in1997. The table was featured widely and brought them to the attention of Guilio Cappellini. This was to be the beginning of a long working relationship with the renowned Italian producer.
Much of their early work involved the folding and shaping of sheet material -influenced by the white card they used frequently in their architectural model making. Plywood and perspex were used in the development of the Pilot Table, 1999, and Stencil Screen, 2000, for Cappellini. The experimental Hula Stool, 2001, originated from sheet plywood reassembled to create complex, compound curves; the Shell Table, 2002, (nominated for the Compasso d'or) and Shell Chair, were further structural studies in plywood. The use of folds created beam structures that could take the weight of a person but were also incredibly light. In 1999 Levi's approached BarberOsgerby to join a team who were developing the ingenious ‘Engineered Jeans' range. Barber Osgerby were responsible for producing 2 hangers to display the range in all Levi's 9000 shops around the world. Commissions became more diverse in 2002 when they were commissioned to design furniture for a cathedral on the south coast of England and were approached by Coca-Cola to design a bottle for a new drink they were developing, ‘Ipsei'. These contrasting projects showed the flexibility, and capability of Edward and Jay to design for both hand-crafted, batch produced furniture on the one hand and a PET bottle that is today produced at 1.2 million bottles a day. In the same year they completed Stella McCartney's first store in Manhattan with bespoke furniture produced by Cappellini.
In 2004 BarberOsgerby were awarded the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for Furniture, the UK's most significant applied and decorative arts prize. This led to a commission to design furniture for the De La Warr Pavilion, Britain's most important modernist building. The resulting die cast aluminium chair is now in the V&A Museum collection. In 2005 the Zero-In table was launched by the British producer Established & Sons. The table employs car industry techniques in its construction, never before used in the furniture industry. In May of the same year, in collaboration with Pantone, BarberOsgerby designed the central space for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. The now iconic multi-coloured Flight Stools where produced with corresponding Pantone reference numbers screen-printed on the side. More recently they have been commissioned to design the furniture for the entrance foyer of the Royal Institute of British Architects in Portland Place. They were also jointly named ‘designers of the future' with Established & Sons at Design Basel / Miami in June 2006.
BarberOsgerby has since been developing collections for leading manufacturers and clients such as Magis, Authentics, Venini, Swarovski, Flos, Established & Sons and Panasonic. Both Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have lectured at a number of design events and design schools, including hosting workshops at Ecal, Switzerland and the Vitra Design Museum. BarberOsgerby's work is found in many permanent collections including the V&A Museum-London, Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York and the Design Museum, London.

Francesco Binfaré
Art Director at Centro Cesare Cassina between 1969 and 1973.
Art Director at Cassina between 1973 and 1988.
Worked on projects for Cassina, De Padova, Venini.
He has worked with Edra since 1992 and with Magis since 2004
He was born and still lives in Milan.
In 1960 he met Cesare Cassina who offered him the rare chance of creating arts in the industrial sector.
Between 1967 and 1980 he produced a major cycle of drawings which still represent the most important source for his research. Parts of this cycle, such as Il gigante e l'ombra (The Giant and the Shade), La colpa e l'architettura (Guilt and Architecture) touched on archetypal images such as the matrix, alreadyanticipating the essential issues of post modernism.
At the Cesare Cassina Centre, a design research centre sponsored by Cassina and C&BItalia, he worked with a group of technical experts and craftsmen, transferring artistic process into design research. He investigated new methodologies to support and promote individual and collective creativity. He involved various architects and designers in the creation of products which have turned into Italian design icons – Maralunga by Vico Magistretti, Up 5 and Sit Down by Gaetano Pesce, Bambole by Mario Bellini, AeO by Archizoom. He coordinated the selection of projects for the ground breaking exhibition New Domestic Landscape of Italian Design at MOMA in New York in 1972. In order to pursue his research, he travelled to India, the US and Japan. (1970-1973). He promoted experimental initiatives such as Braccio di ferro with Gaetano Pesce and Alessandro Mendini (1973) for an edition of Avant-garde prototypes. In 1974 he formed Environmedia with Mario Bellini and Pierpaolo Saporito promoting the use of interactive media in project practices.
In 1980 he set up his own Design and Communication Centre for project research and development. He was involved in many important projects for Cassina such as Cab by Mario Bellini, Wink by Toshiyuki Kita, and Tramonto a New York, Sansone, Feltri by Gaetano Pesce.
He designed themed installations giving them a specific title for the launch of each new product so inventing, what would later be called, event concept. Some of the most interesting examples of his work are: Il Ponte (“The Bridge”, Cassina 1977), I fiori crescono sulle rovine (“Flowers growing from the ruins”, 1978), Design, autoritratto con padre e architettura (“Design, self-portrait with father and architecture”, Triennale 1979 ), Il confine (“The Limit ”, Cassina 1980), Il tempo dell'acqua o dei bagnanti dopo Marx (“The time of water or of bathers after Marx”, Cassina 1982), L'isola dei fiori del vento (“The island of the flowers of the wind”, 1984), New Adam and Eve (Venini 1985).
Il Ponte was the first in a cycle of installations, a metaphorical and representative journey into design and the socio-cultural metamorphosis for the end of the millennium. The cycle finished in 1996 with the exhibition La mia Mano Destra (“My right hand”) at Galleria Milano.
From 1982 to 1985 he worked with Venini to create Il Cielo, a collection of lighting objects. He has been a lecturer at Milan's Domus Academy, London's Royal College of Arts, Milan's Istituto Europeo di Design and has held workshops and conferences in major cities around the world.
In 1992, in a phase of intense dialogue with Pierre Restany, he embarkeed upon a series of huge paintings on sheets called Tracce emozionali domestiche (Traces of domesticated emotions) after which he was invited by Massimo Morozzi to design for Edra. The encounter with Edra marked the beginning of a peculiar and fascinating period. With the invention and design of such classics as L'homme et la femme (1993), Flap (2000), On the rocks (2004), he was able to synthesize in a single product, his curiosity and interest in human behaviour with an interactive movement.
In 2004, after meeting with Eugenio Perazza and Magis, a new experience took shape; where quality and meaning have to tackle the problems of mass production. Corbeille a sofa designed for Edra (2006) and Annett a collection of chairs for Magis (2007) are the first results of this new period of expression.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec were born in Quimper, respectively in 1971 and 1976.
As soon as he graduated from the «Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs», Ronan began working alone, progressively assisted by Erwan, still a student at the «Ecole des Beaux-Arts» of Cergy Pontoise. The two brothers have been working together since 1999. Their collaboration is a constant dialogue, nourished by their single identities and strived towards a common goal.
They met Giulio Cappellini in 1997, while showing the “Disintegrated Kitchen” at the Salon du Meuble in Paris. This was the starting point of a regular cooperation that gave birth to various projects as of 1999. In 2000, Issey Miyake commissioned them for a shop in Paris, dedicated to his new collection A-Poc. The very same year, they met Rolf Felhbaum, Chairman of Vitra, and began working on a new Office Furniture System called “Joyn” and edited in 2002. This recent project opened the way for further collaboration.
Today, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec work together with numerous manufacturers such as Vitra, Cappellini, Issey Miyake, Magis, Ligne Roset, Habitat and the Kréo Gallery. At the same time, they realize some architecture projects, like the «Floating House», an artist Studio under construction, commissioned by “Le centre d'Art de Chatou”.
Named “Creator of the Year” at the Salon du Meuble in Paris, 2002, they won multiple awards like the “New Designer Awards” of the International Furniture Fair of New York in 1999, le Grand Prix du Design de la Ville de Paris in 1998 and the First Prize of Saint-Etienne Biennale in 1998. In 2003, they were elected “designer of the year” by Elle Decoration, Japan.
Their creations have been exhibited in many collective or solo exhibitions like “Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec” in the London Design Museum in 2002. In June 2004, a new solo exhibition will take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec's designs are part of some permanent museum collections including New York Museum of Modern Art, the “Musée National d'Art Moderne- Centre Georges Pompidou” in Paris, the London Design Museum, the Lisbon Design Museum and the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum of Rotterdam..
After the first publication dedicated to them «Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec - Catalogue de raison», Editions Images Modernes / Kréo, 2002, they designed themselves a new book: «Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec», edited by Phaidon in 2003.

Jozeph Forakis
Jozeph Forakis was born in New York. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and Masters of Industrial Design from the Domus Academy in Milan. His work as designer is recognized for it's innovative use of materials and techniques, as well as for his ongoing investigation into the ‘behavioral' influence of interactive information technologies in product design and in everyday objects.
The son of career artists, his cultural approach to design reflects his background in art and theatre with early professional experiences including set and lighting design for New York theatre. Other early experiences established his interest in research-driven design, with work in the US high-technology and biomedical sectors.
Since 1993 he has run his own Milan-based strategic design consulting studio, working with a wide range of international clients. He is also teacher and lecturer at the Domus Academy.
In parallel, from 1999-2002 he was European Design Director for MOTOROLA mobile communications and was responsible for the design of the Motorola V70 mobile phone. From 1993-1997 he consulted with the Domus Academy Research Center in Milan, as Coordinator of the “SmarTools Lab”, specializing in strategic design research, interaction design and the design and development of products and services with information technologies.
His designs have won several awards and have been featured in numerous publications, including the recent book “SPOON” (Phaidon Press) and “50 Lights” (Mel Byars), and have been displayed in many galleries and museums around the world.
His work was included in the historic exhibitions “Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design” and “Workspheres”, both at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where it now forms part of the permanent collection.
In October 2003 his work was the subject of the first one-man show ever organized by ADI (Italian Design Association) in the exhibition “Jozeph Forakis: 10 years of Design in Italy”.
Naoto Fukasawa
Naoto Fukasawa was born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1956. He graduated from Tama Art University in 1980. He worked at Seiko Epson, where he designed wrist TVs and mini printers using micro-technology developed from wristwatch technology; LCD TVs, LCD projectors and other equipment. He went to the United States in 1989 and joined the San Francisco deign firm ID Two, the predecessor to IDEO. While working for IDEO, he worked on a number of products related to Silicon Valley computing and electronics technology. Amongst these were the left heart ventricle support systems for Baxter and AVOCET's VERTECH ALPIN/SKI watch. He was also involved in the development of a design language and design concept for Apple. He has designed a number of products utilizing state-of-the-art technology for start-up companies and for big brand name computer and communications related companies, and has won numerous design awards in Europe and the United States successively from year to year.
In 1996, he returned to Japan to start and head up IDEO's Tokyo office. While acting as a design consultant to major Japanese companies, he also held design workshops - the “without thought” workshops - with young designers. The idea behind them was, “People think that design is something that appeals to people's emotions, but in fact people are linked on a daily basis to things, to the environment, without being aware of it – unconsciously. This unthinking state makes actions smooth; if we think closely about what we're doing, our actions become awkward or wooden. By converting the ideas extracted from the interaction of the unconscious mind with objects into tangible form, can we not create designs where individuality does not stand out; designs that make us feel a kind of simplicity, that entwine with people's actions and with the environment?” “Without thought” proved popular and holds exhibitions every year. This year, the 7th without thought workshop is going to be hold. During the first workshop, he came up with the design for the wall-mounted CD player that was taken up and released by MUJI, and which has proved very popular worldwide. In 2004, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York selected this CD player for its permanent collection.
In 2000, at the invitation of MoMA, he presented his work “Personal Skies” at their “Workspheres” exhibition. Since 2001, he has acted on the design advisory board of MUJI. He went independent in 2003 and established Naoto Fukasawa Design. He worked on design for a mobile phone, called :INFOBAR, which became very popular and lead the design market for mobile phone in Japan. He also started up the electrical household appliance and sundries brand ±0, and the opening of the ±0 retail store in Aoyama, Tokyo garnered a great deal of attention from not only in Japan but worldwide. In April 2005, he presented his works for 7 major brands at Milano Salone del Mobile and?received great response . As of 2005, he began concurrently acting as a professor at Musashino Art University, a visiting professor at Tama Art University and a special lecturer of interdisciplinary information studies at Tokyo University Graduate School.
